Faculty and staff at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) gathered on February 27, 2026, in the 24-hour Library for an engaging book review session hosted by the university’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). The event spotlighted strategies to enhance teaching and learning across the institution.
The session featured an in-depth exploration of A Handbook for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Enhancing Academic Practice (Third Edition), a 544-page volume edited by Heather Fry, and others. Prof. Isioma Anwuli Ibewuike of the School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Petroleum Chemistry, led the review, presenting the handbook as an indispensable resource for modern educators.
Drawing on contributions from 37 authors across 29 chapters, the handbook bridges theory and classroom practice. Prof. Ibewuike highlighted its guidance on curriculum design, assessment strategies, and e-learning integration. “This book doesn’t just tell you what works; it pushes you to ask why it works in your context,” she said, a statement that resonated with the diverse audience of academics, postgraduate students, and administrative staff.
Describing the text as “a ready reference for new lecturers and a professional development tool for seasoned educators,” Prof. Ibewuike praised its interdisciplinary approach, noting its emphasis on context-specific solutions rather than generic strategies.
The session encouraged active participation, particularly around chapters on student engagement and assessment methodologies. Several faculty members expressed plans to integrate the book’s reflective exercises into their own courses.
In her remarks the Director of the center Prof. Agatha Ukata stressed the importance of lifelong learning in academia. “Learning is a continuum; no one knows everything, whether you are a professor emeritus,” she said, underscoring the value of ongoing professional growth.
