The Department of English Language and Literature serves the entire University through the teaching of General Education (GENED) Writing courses, Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses.

The Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses run by the department have been accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission.

The Language Concentration emphasizes the teaching of Phonology, Morphology, Syntax and Semantics, while the Literature Concentration focuses on Poetry, Prose and Drama.

The Department also oversees the activities of the Writing Center of the University.

Mission

The mission of the department is to cultivate an understanding of language, literature, and communication, fostering critical thinking and creativity among students.

The department aims to prepare graduate and undergraduate students for diverse careers by enhancing their analytical, writing, and research skills.

Vision

The vision of the department is to be a globally recognized department for literary and linguistic excellence, promoting interdisciplinary research, cultural awareness, and innovative teaching methods.

AUN’s ESL Program

Diploma and Certificate Programs help students acquire the language skills they need for success at AUN.

The program consists of two one-semester courses which award students, potentially, an English-language Diploma or an English-language Certificate. Find out more here .

AUN’s Writing Program

Dynamic courses prepare students to articulate their ideas following the international conventions of academic writing in English.

All students complete Composition I (WRI 101), which develops effective written communication as well as critical and analytical skills, and Composition II (WRI 102), which prepares them to undertake and communicate their research.

Students who need help building vocabulary, improving their reading comprehension, and mastering fundamentals of English usage and mechanics are placed in Introduction to Composition (WRI 100).

The Writing Center

AUN’s Writing Center offers free academic and literacy support that enables writers to read strategically, listen actively, compose content in multimodal ways, interact meaningfully, and communicate fluently in verbal or written forms. Find out more here .
