The Department of General Education provides a strong academic foundation for all students at the American University of Nigeria, delivering courses that are essential to their intellectual and personal development.
As a service department open to all admitted students, General Education plays a vital role in fulfilling graduation requirements while equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed for academic excellence, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
Through a diverse curriculum — including courses such as Nigerian Peoples and Cultures, Logic, Philosophy and Human Existence, Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship, History, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills, and introductory studies in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and languages — the department fosters a broad, well-rounded educational experience that prepares students for global engagement.
Committed to innovation and student success, the department promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and continuously enhances support services such as tutoring and mentoring.
With an emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving, alongside regular curriculum review and improvement, the General Education Department ensures that its programs remain relevant, forward-looking, and aligned with the university’s mission of developing thoughtful, capable graduates.
