Public health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities—through promoting healthy lifestyles, tracking and researching diseases, and responding effectively to emerging health challenges. At the American University of Nigeria, this mission is at the heart of one of our newest and most exciting academic units: the Department of Public Health.

Established in 2023 under the School of Basic Medical and Allied Health Sciences, the Department is rapidly growing—actively recruiting talented faculty, shaping a dynamic research agenda, and contributing to the University’s expanding footprint in the health sciences.

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health (B.Sc. Public Health) is a four-year degree designed to prepare students to address pressing health challenges at the community, national, and global levels. The program combines coursework in disease prevention, epidemiology, environmental health, and health promotion with practical training in research, data analysis, and community engagement—equipping graduates to improve population health and strengthen health systems.
