In just a decade, what began as a bold academic vision on the serene hills of Yola has grown into one of the most compelling stories in higher education across Africa. At the American University of Nigeria, a university founded on the transformative ideals of American-style liberal arts education and leadership for service, the School of Graduate Studies has emerged as a powerful engine of research, innovation, and human development. From its humble beginnings in 2016, the school has steadily evolved into a vibrant intellectual community where scholars, professionals, and future leaders are equipped not only with advanced knowledge but also with the courage and capacity to shape the future of Nigeria, Africa, and the wider world.
The story began with vision and purpose. Recognizing the urgent need for advanced education that speaks directly to Africa’s development realities, AUN launched its graduate programs with two foundational pillars: business and technology. These were not merely academic disciplines, but strategic responses to the forces shaping the continent’s future.
At the forefront of this vision were the School of Business and Entrepreneurship (SBE) and the School of Information Technology & Computing (SITC), the pioneering schools that laid the foundation for what the Graduate School would become. Designed to prepare professionals for leadership in a rapidly evolving global landscape, these schools combined academic rigor with ethical leadership, practical relevance, and the liberal arts philosophy that defines the AUN experience.
Within the SBE, the university created a clear academic pathway that opens doors for students from diverse professional and educational backgrounds. From the Postgraduate Diploma in Management for non-business graduates to the M.Sc., MBA, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs, the school has become a ladder of opportunity, producing graduates ready to lead in boardrooms, policy spaces, and classrooms around the world. Its flexible online MBA option has further expanded access, enabling working professionals to pursue advanced education while remaining active in their careers.
At the same time, SITC positioned itself at the frontier of Africa’s digital transformation. Through advanced degree programs, MSc and PhD in Computer Science and Information Systems, as well as MSc in Data Science and Analytics, and professional master’s hybrid options for the Master of Information & Communication Sciences (MICS) and Master of Telecommunications & Wireless Technologies, AUN began nurturing a new generation of innovators capable of bridging technical expertise with organizational leadership. In an era increasingly defined by data, software, and digital infrastructure, these programs have become central to shaping African-led technological solutions that are both scalable and globally competitive.
As the Graduate School matured, so too did its ambition. What began with business and technology soon expanded into a multidisciplinary ecosystem of advanced scholarship that reflects the university’s broader liberal arts mission.
The School of Arts and Sciences emerged as a dynamic center for research and intellectual inquiry, offering postgraduate programs in Petroleum Chemistry, English Language and Literature, and Communication & Multimedia Design. These programs not only deepen disciplinary expertise but also reinforce AUN’s belief in education as a force for social transformation.
Particularly significant is the school’s collaboration with UNICEF through the M.Sc. in Communication for Social and Behavior Change. This program serves as a platform for training professionals who lead life-changing interventions in public health, social development, and community engagement across Africa. It stands as one of the clearest expressions of AUN’s commitment to scholarship with impact.
The Graduate School’s influence has also extended into the School of Engineering, where scientific inquiry meets real-world innovation. With PGD, M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs in Chemical, Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering, the school continues to respond to the continent’s industrial and technological needs. Its focus on sustainable technology and renewable energy reflects the urgent demands of the present moment, while the Postgraduate Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering supports professionals transitioning into one of the fastest-growing sectors of the modern economy.
AUN is set to break new ground with the launch of the School of Law’s graduate wing in the fall of 2026, offering LLM and Ph.D. programs. At the same time, the School of Arts and Sciences will expand its contribution to policy and development scholarship through the introduction of M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Economics, strengthening the university’s voice in Africa’s fiscal and socio-economic discourse.
Reflecting on this remarkable journey, Dr. Adewale James, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, underscored the significance of the school’s continued growth during the university’s most recent commencement milestone.
“At AUN, graduate education integrates innovation, research, and real-world problem-solving, preparing students to lead in academia, industry, government, and the global knowledge economy.”
He further stated that over 40 graduate students will be walking at the 2026 Commencement Ceremony. “This milestone reflects the continued growth and impact of AUN’s graduate programs since its inception.”
Perhaps one of the most defining milestones in this evolution is AUN’s strategic partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). This collaboration stands as a strong testament to the university’s growing reputation as a premier research institution in Nigeria and across Africa. By strengthening infrastructure, expanding scholarship opportunities, and supporting high-impact research, the partnership ensures that knowledge produced within AUN translates into practical solutions for society.
Today, the School of Graduate Studies stands as far more than an academic institution. It is a living expression of AUN’s identity as the Development University , a place where scholarship meets service, innovation meets leadership, and education becomes a catalyst for national and continental transformation.
From its humble beginnings in 2016 to its growing global relevance today, the evolution of AUN’s Graduate School is more than a story of institutional growth. It is a story of vision fulfilled.
