The Engineering Student Society (ESS) at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) equipped its members with practical skills in peer mentorship and tutoring during a workshop held September 18, 2026, at the 24-Hour Library.
Organized by ESS President Aisha Zubairu, the workshop prepared upperclassmen to provide academic guidance to their peers, particularly incoming freshmen, while strengthening their communication, leadership, and professional skills.
School of Engineering instructor Engr. Cosmas Izuchigbo emphasized the need for peer mentorship to be adaptable and goal-oriented. He said effective programs depend on thoughtful mentor-mentee matching and adequate preparation, enabling mentors to build confidence and respond to their peers’ academic needs.
Director of Academic Advising and Retention Mrs. Enoh Obindu focused on the responsibilities of peer mentors, identifying trust, active listening, and respect as essential to building productive relationships with mentees.
“Mentors are encouraged to provide guidance and support while avoiding the temptation to make decisions for their mentees,” Obindu noted, urging members to maintain professional standards while helping their peers develop the confidence to make informed decisions.
English Department instructor Mrs. Ogechi Dan Okereke focused on the practical side of tutoring, discussing session planning and foundational techniques for providing targeted academic support.
The workshop gave ESS members a clearer understanding of how to guide, support, and tutor their peers while developing skills that extend beyond the classroom.
