At the American University of Nigeria, learning is not confined to the classroom. Students are expected to ask questions, think independently, conduct research, and take an active role in shaping their academic growth.
As the Fall 2026 semester gets underway, Provost Prof. Bolade Agboola encouraged students to take greater ownership of their studies by making full use of available academic resources and building strong relationships with faculty. “Students must pay close attention to their studies and take responsibility for their academic progress,” he said, adding that those facing challenges should seek guidance from faculty rather than trying to work through them alone.
Research, he noted, is also central to academic success. He called on students to strengthen their research and academic writing skills by utilizing resources such as the Writing Center and the American Space, and to consult their academic advisors whenever they need support.
Building meaningful ties with faculty, particularly for research, projects, and coursework, is equally important. Asking questions, seeking feedback, and engaging with professors, he said, will help students get the most from the support available to them and approach their work with greater confidence.
Prof. Agboola reminded students to remain focused on why they are at the university and to stay committed to the goals they have set for themselves. The university, he said, provides opportunities and resources to support them, but students must take the initiative to make the most of those resources.
As the Fall 2026 semester moves forward, the Provost’s message is ultimately about taking charge of one’s education. Through research, engagement with faculty, effective use of university resources, and a clear sense of purpose, students can develop not only academically, but also the confidence and independence to carry their learning beyond AUN.
