At the American University of Nigeria (AUN), student initiatives are redefining how education can drive community transformation. Nafisa Rilwan, a standout AUN student, has shown that purposeful action can extend far beyond the classroom, inspiring a chain of academic and social impact across her community.
Through a meticulously organized community service project, Nafisa led an outreach program for secondary school students preparing for WAEC and JAMB examinations. Her goal was not only to strengthen their academic skills but also to foster a culture of giving back. Recognizing the challenges faced by students from underserved backgrounds, she focused on empowering them with knowledge, confidence, and the tools to succeed.
But Nafisa’s vision went further. She created a “teaching chain exercise”, a ripple effect designed to extend learning to children with disabilities at the Remi Foundation. By encouraging the students she mentored to share their knowledge with others, Nafisa established a sustainable cycle of learning and service.
“I impacted these students so that they could, in turn, educate children with disabilities at the Remi Foundation,” Nafisa explained. “This approach ensures that each student contributes to the community while being guided and supported throughout the process.”
The initiative, which ran from January to March, trained 15 students under Nafisa’s mentorship. Each participant committed to continuing the teaching chain, passing on lessons not only for academic success but also for fostering empathy, inclusion, and community responsibility.
Reflecting on her work, Nafisa emphasized the transformative power of purpose:
“Life begins with purpose. With the privileges we have, we must create initiatives that affect the world, one step at a time.”
Nafisa’s project exemplifies how individual leadership can spark collective impact. By turning education into a vehicle for social change, she has not only prepared students for critical examinations but also nurtured a culture of compassion, inclusion, and shared responsibility, hallmarks of AUN’s mission to deliver quality education that changes lives.
