AUN Celebrates Staff Excellence with February “Staff of the Month” Award

On March 31, 2026, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) shone a spotlight on dedication and service, honoring staff whose efforts continue to drive the institution’s growth. The monthly Staff of the Month Award was presented at a ceremony held in the President’s Office, reflecting the university’s commitment to recognizing excellence across its workforce.

Introduced in October 2024 by President Dr. Dewayne Fraiser, the initiative seeks to consistently celebrate outstanding staff performance. In a notable update, the nomination process now rotates focus across departments each month, with supervisors nominating three candidates and the wider university community voting for the winner. February’s recognition spotlighted the Facilities Management Department.

Explaining the rationale behind the revamped system, AVP of Human Resources, Mrs. Faizatu Abubakar Ahmed, emphasized transparency and fairness in the selection process. She then announced the February awardee: Mr. Nathaniel Atayu Mbonno, who secured victory with an impressive margin of 88 points over his nearest contender.

Mr. Mbonno’s impact at AUN was highlighted by his supervisor, Architect Abubarkar Yahaya Bunu, who shared that Nathaniel joined the university in 2013 as a custodian and now serves as Interim Manager of Water Resources. Describing him as “selfless and always ready to meet pressing needs without excuses,” Bunu underscored the dedication that has earned Nathaniel this recognition.

Registrar Mr. Dan Okereke reflected on his personal experience with Mr. Mbonno at the AUN 16 flats, noting, “beyond growing up from a family of hydrologists, honesty is a virtue he builds on.” Similarly, Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Hussaini, observed that “Mr. Mbonno builds his life on openness and transparency,” highlighting the integrity behind his service.

President Dr. Dewayne Fraiser praised the Human Resources team for implementing a credible, transparent selection process and reminded the awardee of the responsibility his recognition entails: “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

The ceremony’s climax saw Mr. Mbonno receive a certificate of recognition and a cash award from the President and HR team, met with warm applause from the AUN community.
