AUN Distance e-Learning Institute Hosts Capacity-Building Workshop Ahead of Regulatory Assessment Visit

The American University of Nigeria's (AUN) Distance e-Learning Institute (DLI) has held a capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening its operational and academic systems for effective Open and Distance Learning delivery.

The workshop, which comes as the Institute continues to enhance its structures as part of ongoing efforts ahead of an expected regulatory assessment visit by the National Universities Commission (NUC), was held on October 14, 2026, at its satellite campus in Yola, Adamawa State

It focused on the operational, academic, and student-support requirements for a functional Open and Distance Learning (ODL) center and was facilitated by Prof. Alkali U. Ahmed, a National Trainer who serves in the Office of Online Distance Learning at Modibbo Adama University.

In a lecture titled “Operations and Requirements for a Functional ODL Center,” Prof. Ahmed stressed the need to maintain professional standards and establish systems that support the institute’s long-term sustainability. “You must maintain the best practices and ensure the longevity of the institution,” he advised.

Participants explored key aspects of distance-learning delivery, including institutional policies, curriculum development, teaching materials, professionalism, student support services, and the use of technology in teaching and learning. The training also covered feedback mechanisms, evaluation procedures, marking schemes, result processing, and certification, highlighting the processes needed to maintain academic standards and ensure accountability.

AUN President Prof. DeWayne Frazier thanked Prof. Ahmed and Modibbo Adama University for sharing their expertise and supporting the development of distance education in the region. He explained that the DLI was established to help the university reach more learners and make higher education accessible to those who might otherwise struggle to attend a conventional university. “We need to expand and enhance access to education for those who may not be privileged to attend regular tertiary institutions,” Prof. Frazier said in his opening remarks.

He also acknowledged Modibbo Adama University’s continued collaboration and contributions to education and capacity development in Nigeria and beyond.

Prof. Adewale James, Pioneer Director of the DLI, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to providing quality education that meets international standards through technology-enabled, learner-centered instruction. He expressed confidence in the institute’s readiness to meet regulatory requirements and deliver effective distance-learning services.

The workshop represents a step toward establishing the systems and staff capacity needed to deliver the proposed program effectively and meet the NUC’s requirements.

As a development university, AUN continues to explore ways to address barriers to education and reach underserved communities. Through the DLI, the university hopes to extend its educational mission to more learners in Nigeria and internationally.
