Members of the AUN Honor Society(AUNHS) met with President Margee Ensign on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at her office to welcome her back to the University. They also used the occasion to update the President on their upcoming activities and review their contribution toward the AUN mission.
The Honor Society is the student organization that recognizes academic excellence among students. Members support their peers in meeting their academic targets and serve the less privileged members of the local community.
Honor Society President Ms. Pwagwadi Madwatte, led her members on the courtesy visit. They expressed delight in the President's reappointment. They discussed the impactful projects they have been working on in the past and present which include peer-tutoring, girl child education, and computer literacy programs within the Yola community. The President was thrilled to learn that the Honor Society members were still committed to the values which the University stands for.
President Ensign was excited that AUNHS has prioritized peer-tutoring and literacy outreach activities in the local community despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Each member of the Society commits to teaching a course or two and for two to ten hours a week, at no cost to the students being tutored. Additionally, in collaboration with the Community Service Office, the Honor Society members teach students in local primary and secondary schools as well.
President Ensign encouraged the members of the Society to document their activities which, when published, will encourage other people and organizations to do likewise. Aribim Bristol, the society's publicity secretary, reported that the North-East Children's Trust (NECT), a private sector, government collaboration, after learning about AUNHS activities, expressed eagerness to partner with the Society in order to tutor students within Adamawa state.
President Ensign assured the honor students of her continued support and reflected on the Feed and Read program which she started back in 2015. That program targets improving Almajiri street boys' and girls' literacy and numeracy. The Feed and Read program provides a decent meal to participants while giving them the basic education they require to make a head start in life.
The President announced the revival of the Feed and Read program while thanking the Honor Society members for their zeal to impact lives.
