SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Reference Librarian shall be responsible for daily public service duties at the reference desk. He shall also ensure that patron receive the research assistance they require in a prompt and professional manner. In addition to the above, the scope of the duties shall include but not limited to the provision of all logistics and reference forms at the reference unit and also ensure that research system in the library is working correctly, and provide support and assistance in information literacy programs either onsite or web-based to students, faculty and staff in accordance with the policies and programs of the American University of Nigeria

DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the reference interview process
  • Assist patrons by answering their face-to-face and online Reference questions and refers them to the appropriate personnel
  • Teaches patrons how to research their information needs via online resources which includes the library catalog, web search tools and the library subscribed databases.
  • Assists patrons with their research needs through directing them to the variety of formats including print, graphics, audio, visuals and online materials.
  • Provide support and assistance in information literacy programs
  • Browse through the online databases and ensure functionality and report to Supervisor defects noticed
  • Participate in the daily routine functionality of the AUN library and position will involve shifting
  • In collaboration with the Circulation staff, performs circulation desk procedures, such as shelving, checking in and checking out materials in all formats, registering patrons, and renewals
  • Provides journal indexes, shelf-guides and labels
  • Assists in Library programs and displays.
  • Assist patron with ready-reference questions and reader advisory and bibliographic instruction.
  • Monitor patron activities at the stacks and other reading rooms and assisting patrons in finding their way in the Stacks and reading rooms.
  • Sort and Shelving of books/items using the Library of Congress Classification system.
  • Check and pull-out books/items that need to be mended or withdrawn and dusting and cleaning of shelves.
  • Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for unit in the temporary absence of a professional librarian.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Requirements for the position:

  • Bachelor's degree in library science, information science, or a related field preferred.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years post NYSC experience working as a reference librarian.
  • Must be a registered member of the Library Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN)
  • Membership of other reputable library professional bodies is an added advantage.
  • Must respects the right of users to determine the direction of their research by empowering them to pursue their own preference
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to determine the situational context of the individual information needs of users when interacting with each user in person or through other communication channels.
  • Must be flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances at workplace.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of library management systems and software.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must also demonstrate team building.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.

  • Ability to work well as a member of a team
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong self-motivation.
