Writing Center Holds Workshop for AUN Schools Secondary

On February 25, The Writing Center held an essay writing workshop for the SS2 students of AUN Schools (Secondary).

The session was anchored on essay planning and structure, the importance of writing an essay outline, and tips for writing an essay outline. The workshop was organized as a preparatory mechanism for the students toward the WAEC examinations, to harness the students writing abilities and facilitate a smooth writing transition from high school to college.

The Center’s Coordinator Nicholas Achoda explained that an essay outline is a skeletal framework that supports the essay.

“It is important to have an outline as it provides a structure so that your ideas and thoughts flow chronologically. Using an outline makes the essay smooth and organized; without it, your essay runs the risk of going in different directions.”

He also advised that students take out time to write an outline to ensure that they craft a well written, polished and convincing essay.

Mr. Achoda gave the students some tips on writing an essay outline such as choosing a topic or idea, choosing an angle or position on the topic, conducting research to support the topic, making a good impression with the first paragraph and making sure that the beginning and end of the essay are attention-grabbing.

“Learn to write with a global mindset, so your readers can make sense of what you have written.”

The students had practical, hands-on exercises such as video reviews and chain stories to assess their level of understanding and assimilation.
