In the build-up to Founder’s Day 2018, President Dekle with the SGA executive team inspected the AUN foundation stone which was laid 15 years ago by President Olusegun Obasanjo.
“We are excited about Founder’s Day,” said President Dekle, “and I think it is important to go to the foundation stone of the university and revisit it.”
The President said the essence of the November 22 outing was to reminisce about the beginning of AUN.
“It is to make sure the foundation stone is still in good condition, to make sure we remember where we came from, to unite the president of the university and the president of the student body and his executive team.”
SGA President, Yusuf Ayman Usman, said he considered it a privilege to join President Dekle in this symbolic endeavor. SGA Treasurer and Law major, Taslim Oladoja, spoke in the same vein.
The epigraph on the stone reads:
“AUN was founded in 2003 by Nigeria’s second elected Vice President, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar. Originally established in partnership with the American University of Washington, DC, AUN is the first American style university in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since its inception, the American University of Nigeria has sought to participate in the development of Nigeria and Africa actively. As the continent’s first development university, AUN seeks to play its part in creating a more just, prosperous, and responsible world, and in educating its students toward that end.”
