TRUSTEE DONATES TO NEW PETROLEUM CHEMISTRY LAB

American University of Nigeria has been blessed with prominent Nigerians and International renowned scholars and business men in its board. AUN Board of Trustees members have over the years led in ensuring the growth of the University by donating generously to major projects embarked upon by the University.

Continuing in that tradition, Dr. Jemila Abubakar, AUN Board member last June made a generous donation of $40,000 to the School of Arts and Sciences to set up two laboratories for the Petroleum Chemistry, Engineering option. The two laboratories which were opened on November 04, 2009 are equipped with 35 computers, with first class software like Mathlab, statistical software, minitab, etc, and heavy duty printers. They also have industrial inverters to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the equipment.

Dr. Bayo Lawal, Academic Vice President expressed his appreciation to the donor, Dr. Jemila Abubakar for her support. He said that the new lab will go a long way in assisting the students in their lab work. He further stated that the University has employed renowned professors in Petroleum Engineering to join other professors in the program.

Dr. Uzoma Okorie, Assistant Professor of Petroleum Chemistry expressed her appreciation for the gift: “we are truly grateful for this wonderful gift. We appreciate the continued commitment to academics and learning. This lab will have many benefits now and in the future and we appreciate the foresight and investment in this project,” said Dr. Okorie.

Dr. Okorie talked on the usefulness of the lab to students: “the new lab will help students have access to cutting edge software and equipment to study various engineering problems. The lab will also serve as an excellent training arena for students. It will allow students to have access to high quality programming equipment which is standard in engineering programs in the US,” she said, adding that: “the labs will also allow the students to develop model systems and to understand the inner-workings of those systems.” Dr. Okorie further stated that: “the labs will also allows proper planning of plant design and systems. Each computer in the lab has MATLAB, which is one of premier software programs for technical and engineering fields. It is robust software which allows applications in chemical and petroleum engineering, bioinformatics, statistics and much more.”

Dr. Conrad Festa, President of AUN also expressed satisfaction with the equipment in the lab adding that students will not only have to learn the theoretical aspect but the practical as well: “This lab is a plus to the University. The Petroleum Chemistry lab is known to be the best any institution in Nigeria can boast of in term of facilities and equipment,” said Dr. Festa. He thanked Dr. Jemila for the gift and her continuous support to the University.
