HULT Prize at AUN Invites Teams to Compete In 2018

AUN is now set to host another local edition of the HULT Prize, as students answer the United Nations Challenge and go head-to-head for $1 million!

The Campus Director, Muhammad R. Balarabe, has therefore announced the ongoing recruitment of volunteers and teams who are interested in registering for the 2018 competition.

The HULT Prize Foundation, the world’s largest startup accelerator for social entrepreneurship, holds an annual $1,000,000 international competition for university students.  These students are challenged to develop innovative social enterprises that aim to tackle grave social issues faced by billions of people.

In early 2015, American University of Nigeria, as the only undergraduate team to make it twice to the Dubai semi-final, earned the hosting right for “The HULT Prize @ AUN.”  At this level of the competition, participants from AUN get an opportunity to bypass 10,000 applicants in the traditional process.

This privilege fast tracks the AUN team and its ideas through to one of five regional final rounds of the competition.  AUN’s undergraduate scholars competed against master’s degree students, Ph.D. candidates, and alumni from other universities around the world.

In partnership with the United Nations, the HULT Prize is hosting college and university events around the world in search of the next game-changing start-up.  Mr. Balarabe is confident that his peers on campus have as good a chance as anyone else to go all the way and win.

“The passion, brilliance, entrepreneurship spirit, and commitment to community service of AUN students are one of the cornerstones of my decision to be a campus director (CD).  I believe AUN - Africa's first development university - has what it takes to win the HULT Prize and transform the lives of 10 million people.”

The winner of the intra-campus event will automatically advance to compete in one of the fifteen regional finals happening around the world next March.  One winning team from each host city will then move on to a summer business incubator, where participants will receive mentorship, advisory and strategic planning as they create prototypes and set-up to launch their new social business.  A final round of competition will be hosted in September 2018, where the winning team to be awarded the $1,000,000 prize.
