First Update on the Search for the Next Vice President for Academic Affairs at American University Of Nigeria

THE VICE PRESIDENT ACADEMIC AFFAIRS (VPAA) PROFILE

FROM DR. ENYANTU IFENNE, CHAIR OF THE SEARCH COMMITTEE

We are pleased to inform the American University of Nigeria community that our Vice President for Academic Affairs search is under way.

Our search consultants, Maya Ranchod Kirkhope and Dr. Bill Franklin of Academic Search, Inc., launched the search a few days ago and will spend the next few weeks recruiting for this position.

Our first search committee meeting with Maya Kirkhope is scheduled for the week of January 25 when she will be on campus for the presidential search finalist visit. We anticipate that the Board of Trustees will appoint the new AUN President at the end of January or early February 2010. During our VPAA search committee meeting, we will discuss the search process; review the search timeline; discuss the newly appointed AUN President's involvement in the search process; and plan the neutral site and finalist visits.

Maya and Bill have developed a job ad and position profile describing the key institutional needs and priorities, and a related set of desired characteristics for our next VPAA. The job ad has been posted in a number of publications including the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Diverse and the American Conference of Academic Deans. We have attached the position profile for your information. In addition, we have also provided a list of search committee members.

We urge you to suggest people you know who could serve effectively as our next VPAA or those who might recommend potential candidates. Please forward their name(s) to Maya (maya.kirkhope@academic-search.com). The success of our search will depend on the involvement, support and interest of all members of the AUN community.

Our consultants have begun to work on generating a candidate pool. In addition to posting the job ad in key publications, they mailed source and prospect letters to a broad network of contacts, and will follow up on nominations submitted by you and other members of the higher education community. The search committee will begin to review applications by mid-February to identify a small group of candidates whose skills and expertise appear to be most closely related to our needs. The committee expects to conduct neutral-site interviews in mid-March, and plans to invite finalists to campus in early April. We expect the successful candidate to assume office in early summer, 2010.

You will receive another update on the VPAA search in a few weeks. Thank you for your continued interest and support.
