Byron S. Bullock

Byron Bullock serves as the Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Students at the American University of Nigeria in Yola. He has administrative oversight for the Office of the Registrar, New Student Orientation, The First Year Experience Program, Academic Advising, Student Activities and Involvement, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health and Wellness, Athletics, Judicial Affairs, Residence Life, Housing Assignments and ID Card Services, Studies Abroad, Community Outreach and Service Learning, the Campus Activities Board and the Student Government Association. Additionally, he serves as an adjunct faculty member and teaches in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship.  

Byron was born in Washington, DC to the parents of Gloria and Willie Bullock. He was raised in Washington, DC and Hartford, Connecticut. In 1973, he enrolled at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania where he received his Bachelors of Arts degree in English in 1977.  He began his career in Higher Education at Lincoln University where, upon graduation, he began working as Assistant Director of Admissions.  In 1979 he was hired to work at the University of Delaware as Assistant Director for Upward Bound and Pre-Collegiate Programs. He spent 6 years at the University of Delaware working with pre-collegiate students who had interest in pursuing their college degrees. In 1985 he was hired by James Madison University in Virginia as Assistant Dean of Students. He received his Master’s degree in Education from James Madison University in 1989 in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Student Personnel Administration and in 1994, he became the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. He also served as Faculty Member in Residence for the James Madison University Studies Abroad program in London, England during the fall of 1993.  While at JMU, he founded the Academy for the Academic Achievement and Development of African-American Males and hosted this program in South Africa during the summer of 1998.  In 1999, he became the Vice President for Student Affairs at Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina where he had broad responsibility for all aspects of student life. In 2006, Byron became the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During his tenure at UMass, he continued his work of providing exceptional experiences for the growth and development of students outside of the classroom.

Byron is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Rotary International Yola, and is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He is married to Antoinette Langston-Bullock, a public school educator in Raleigh, North Carolina and they are the proud parents of two adult children, Melanie Bullock who is on staff at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, and Aaron Bullock, who is employed with Wells Fargo Bank in Charlotte, North Carolina.

His work at AUN has been driven by a desire to infuse the concept of student learning and student development in a country that is starving for exceptional leaders who are well prepared to meet the challenges of a bright future. He is motivated to strengthen the out-of-classroom experiences for students that will ultimately enhance their holistic development and prepare them for real life experiences upon graduation.
